Remove yourself from the slavery of nicotine.
Smokers are always troubled with a nagging feel of doing something wrong. They know how dangerous it is to consume cigarettes. And nobody’s fooling anyone when they claim the soothing aroma and feel of tobacco. Of course, the habit has made them ignore the odor and taste which helps enslave them to the addiction. Some think that they could simply quit smoking soon if they wanted to and though they have that unproven knowledge, they never do anything about it but delay. Nevertheless, Smokers know that sooner or later, they have to kick the their habit.
This is the first, basic step. Try to end smoking right this very minute. After a few minutes, you will feel the craving creeping up again. Measure how well you can resist the temptation before you rush towards the nearest smoke. Treat it as a competition. There will be competitors, people also wanting to quit, and you have to best them. Consider it as something that will exercise your willpower and make it stronger. Consider it as defeating one of your great enemies.
A good way to support yourself from unhealthy desires is to imagine two doors that represents two choices. Make believe that is giving you the chance to say either ‘Yes, I would like to have a smoke right now’, or ‘No, please remind me later.’ Inevitably, the Yes selection will always get chosen for the first few tries. But pretty soon, as you continuously resist and acquire more strength (just like a normal workout session!), you will get more confident and picking no matter how painful the withdrawal effects may be. Afterwards, just carry on picking No.
Some lapses may occur at times, but it is to be expected. The chief thing is that you are trying and being active against your habit. It will take timeso you will inevitably feel sick at times. Just remember that you are attempting to stretch your willpower, and you know what happens to something when you endlessly work on it. It becomes stronger until it almost becomes a wall. There will come a time when a third option will emerge, perhaps after only a month, depending on your level of commitment – ’No, I think I’m done with cigarettes.’
Never let a few bad episodes of withdrawal symptoms, especially iof this is your initial attempt, to discourage you. You will be smoking again a few times, but failure is a good method to acquire experience and use it in your future endeavors. Having a good willpower will also be very helpful after you quit to other bad areas of your lifestyle that you want fixed.
